3 Closet Editing Magic Questions
Who does not dream about a well-organized wardrobe with clothes that work just perfectly for us? But instead, we look into our closet, which is packed with clothes we have not worn for a long time that we don’t like or are not working for us anymore…
Well, I think you need a Closet Editing mon amie!
Doing one regularly is always a good idea, especially at the beginning of a new season. You can put away your Summer or Winter clothes, and access what you need and what you did not wear at all for the last couple of months.
When with my clients, I always ask them 3 questions that help them decide what to keep or not.
Let’s take a casual dress as an example - Looking at it, I will ask:
Is she tired? Talking about the piece of clothing here ;)
Sometimes we love some pieces so much that they get worn out. It means that you got great use out of them but it is time to find a replacement (aka: it goes on your shopping list)
When was the last time you wore it?
If not once during the last season or even the last year - It says something - it is time to let it go because you will most likely wear something else before picking this one out of the closet.
Does it fit?
Here we have to be sincere with ourselves. If it does not fit well, or it is not comfortable, most likely you won’t wear it. If it just needs a minor alteration, make a tailoring pile and put it in your car or by your door to not forget about it and have it done.
I also understand that sometimes, we want to hold on to certain pieces because we think we will eventually get back into them once we lose a little bit of weight. It is absolutely fine to hold on to a few but let’s put them aside so our closet carries pieces that we only love and can wear now.
Bodies come in all shapes and forms, and knowing how to dress and love our body the way it is is so important. As a Personal Stylist, my goal for my clients is for them to love how they look with their current bodies. So having a closet filled with great pieces you can wear right now is crucial, so you are not frustrated when getting dressed in the morning.
With that said, if within the next 6 months you are not wearing again the pieces you put aside, I would say that it is just time to part ways with them and focus on clothes that work great for you.
Once you review each piece in your wardrobe and have a conversation with each one of them you should have made some space in your closet!
At that point, I always recommend creating sections by categories and colors (i.e all bottoms together and then subcategorize them by color…black pants together, blue ones together etc…) so you can identify what you are looking for more easily.
Lastly, put pieces on a hangar that are in your drawers so you can easily grab them. Often we don’t wear some of our clothes because we don’t see them. On hangers, we will have a better chance to think about them =)
During a closet editing session with my clients, I often use tags, assess what we need for shopping reference, and show new ways to put outfits together…I will definitely take the time to write about these in another post, but as of right now, I hope these 3 little questions have a big impact on your closet - they are definitely doing the trick for me!
So, just be sincere with yourself during that process and get the edited wardrobe you deserve!
Bisous!
