How To Dress For Your Age
Dressing appropriately for our age… a “life conundrum” that my clients have asked me to help them define over the years.
First and foremost, the most important is to recognize that our image and style evolve with us. We don’t have to be stuck with one style and one image for our entire lives. In my 20’s my style was very different. I was a mix of a surf girl and wearing big logos everywhere… no I never surfed… logos were cool…
So a few things to approach:
Define your true style if you are not sure about it yet. In our 20’s we explore different things, and try to look like our girlfriends or the “it girls”. Past that age, it is important to learn and cultivate your own true style. How to develop it? Have a clear vision first. Pinterest can be a great tool to help you put an image to it. Create a board with no more than 10 images and keep these in mind when shopping so you don’t deviate.
Invest in timeless pieces. Fashion trends are fun and can be incorporated here and there but beautiful foundational pieces are always in style and will elevate your style. Also, it will be easier to create an outfit when you want to mix in those trendier pieces. Having the beautiful basics will make it easy.
Aging does not mean looking matronly. It is actually about sophistication. In your 20’s maybe you were not able to pull off a bright red lipstick, or a tuxedo but with maturity comes this confidence.
Fashion is still for everyone no matter how old we are. It is all about knowing what you like about yourself and emphasize it.
If a trend is not for you, don’t wear it, it is that easy. For example, you will never see me with oversized shoulders because it is not for my style or body type. And that is ok.
What is appropriate for one is completely different for another regardless the age. It is about what you feel you can pull off and be comfortable with. In other words… you have to feel good in your own skin and know what works for you. Very often, I make my clients try clothes on that they thought they could not even think about and it actually looks really good on them. It can take a minute to get used to but after that, they are just very happy to wear something new. So for you, I would encourage to go out of your comfort zone, even a little bit, and try styles or clothes that you would not have considered. You might be surprised at what you can pull off.
So, yes you can wear a leather jacket past 60, yes you can wear 90’s trend if you are over 40. It takes maturity to know what works best for you. Dressing your age is to dress the way that makes you feel best and rock it at the same time!
