Fashion Myths Debunked: Breaking the Rules with Style

Fashion is full of so-called "rules" that have been passed down for generations, engraved in the pages of fashion magazines, instilled in the minds of older generations who tell you to not wear white after labor day or what not. But let's be honest—many of them are outdated and repeatedly proven wrong. I want to set you free from the constraints of fashion rules!

Fashion is about expressing yourself and having fun - so let’s try some new things! I’ll be giving you some inspiration that can show you how you may break these “rules”. I advise you to play with your clothes and try things on. If breaking rules teaches us anything it is that there isn’t always a secret formula in styling but rather trying on different things.

Stripes and Florals Don’t Mix

Florals for spring may not be innovative, but matching it with stripes might just be. Stripes and florals can work beautifully together when balanced correctly. The key is to play with scale—pair a delicate floral print with bold, structured stripes to create contrast without clashing. Another trick I like is giving the look a bit of a vintage look - a cinched waist, a button down shirt, a belt, some sunglasses.

Your Shoes and Bag Must Match

Once upon a time, perfectly matching accessories were seen as the gold standard of sophistication. But we are not the Queen of England, so there’s no need to stick to the matchy matchy dress code. In fact, matching accessories is a missed opportunity to make a statement. A bold-colored bag can be a statement piece against neutral shoes, or vice versa. If you’re feeling even more adventurous, why not try making statements out of both?

Dress for Your Age

Fashion doesn’t have an expiration date. The idea that certain pieces—like mini skirts, bright colors, or edgy silhouettes—are off-limits past a certain age is just untrue. Certainly, I wouldn’t advise any of you to dress like a 15 year old on TikTok but that doesn’t mean you can’t wear a crop top. Ultimately it’s about how you bring the outfit together, maybe you don’t match leopard print pants with a crop top - but why not with a delicate cardigan?

Glitter and Sparkles Are Only for Special Occasions

Why save the sparkle for a rare event when you can shine every day? Metallics, sequins, and glittery fabrics can be incorporated into casual outfits in a subtle way. A sequined blazer over a plain tee, a metallic skirt with a cozy knit, or even sparkly accessories can bring a little glamour into your daily wardrobe. Fashion is meant to be fun—wearing a bit of sparkle whenever you feel like it can be an instant mood booster. Don’t save your favorite pieces for occasions that come once every full moon.

Honestly, fashion rules are just fashion myths perpetuated by those not brave enough to explore or stylish enough to pull it off. The most stylish people are those who wear what they love, not what outdated rules dictate. So go ahead—mix your prints, pair unexpected accessories, wear what makes you feel powerful, and embrace a little everyday sparkle!

Bisous my friend!
