A French Twist on Thanksgiving: Uniting Traditions

Thanksgiving is a beloved American holiday, celebrated by family gatherings, delicious feasts, and expressions of gratitude. It's a time to reflect on the things we're thankful for and to cherish the company of loved ones. While Thanksgiving has deep roots in American history, it's also a wonderful occasion to add a touch of international flavor to this celebration. It will probably come as no surprise that I will be infusing some French elements into our Thanksgiving traditions. Adding a twist to this American celebration with our own culture blends the best of both worlds for, I hope, a unique and memorable experience.

Let’s start with the table.

To create a distinct ambiance for your Thanksgiving dinner, start with a French-inspired table setting. Consider using a mix of rustic and elegant elements. You can use a classic French tablecloth with muted colors and floral embroidery, paired with fine china and crystal glasses for a touch of elegance. Add some French-style flatware to complete the aesthetic.

Yes, we will first have some aperitif.

French wine is renowned worldwide, so it's only fitting to include some fine French wines and champagne in your Thanksgiving celebration. Whether you prefer a Bordeaux, a Burgundy, or a Champagne from the Champagne region, these selections can enhance the flavors of your French-inspired dishes. I don’t think any of your guests will say no to that!

What goes with Aperitif? Cheese of course!

Before the main course, I will prepare a cheese platter with an array of French cheeses, such as Brie, Camembert, Roquefort and Petit Basque (the best cheese from where I am from), along with fresh baguettes (no crackers, please!), and some coin paste (delicious with Petit Basque).

The Main Course: A French Roast

While the centerpiece of a traditional American Thanksgiving is often a roasted turkey, I will add a French twist by preparing a succulent roast, such as a Beef Bourguignon or Coq au Vin paired with a gratin dauphinois, haricots verts (green beans), or ratatouille.

French Desserts

To conclude my Thanksgiving dinner with a sweet note, I will finish dinner with some tarte tatin served with whipped cream and vanilla ice cream. Such a classic, you can never go wrong with that!

Incorporating French Gratitude

If I want to challenge my guests, I will ask them to Incorporate a touch of French culture into the expression of gratitude during our Thanksgiving celebration. They could share what they are thankful for in both English and French. A simple "Je suis reconnaissant(e) pour..." (I am thankful for) - Let’s see who is a natural with languages! 😛

French Music in Our Ears

Create a cozy atmosphere with some French classic background music, such as Edith Piaf or Charles Aznavour, to set the mood. If you want some more modern music, I would definitely go with Stromae!

I hope these ideas about how I will incorporate my French culture into Thanksgiving this year will inspire you to get creative in adding your own twist to your Thanksgiving celebrations. I wish you a memorable holiday my friends!
